One Simple Way to Effect Positive Change

At Thread Together we believe there is immense power in clothing. Whether it be a simple t-shirt, a floral dress, a good pair of jeans or a full suit: these items of clothing change people’s lives.

Some might think that caring about what you wear is superficial. However, we have witnessed first-hand from the people we help the way new clothes have given them choice. The choice to express their identity through a wide range of new and good quality clothing provided, but also the confidence to choose to enact positive change in their own lives and the lives of those around them.

Encouraging a positive mindset

Indeed, Thread Together are not the only ones who believe in the power of clothes. Many of those immersed in the fashion industry, both in Australia and worldwide, agree that clothing can encourage a more positive mindset. There is significant research that explains the psychology behind the way you dress that supports Thread Together’s ideology.

Tyler Tervooren, who writes about “science and strategies for becoming a great leader”, wrote an article about the psychology behind the way you dress and explained that “the clothes you wear and the way you groom yourself will change the way other people hear what you say,”.

This notion is reiterated by Josh, one of the young men Thread Together have supported, who stated that “I’ve got a future. There’s hope,”. It is clear that Josh has experienced a change in mindset that has allowed his sense of dignity and hope to be restored with a new path being laid for his future.

New beginnings

While some may regard a focus on clothing or appearance as petty, the responses we receive from those that we help say otherwise. Jodie, a survivor of domestic violence, explained that “being able to dress myself and my children in new clothes marked a new beginning. For the first time in a long time I thought ‘we are all going to be okay’,”.

Words such as these explain the positive change new clothing can have in people’s lives.

If you’re still not convinced, take some time consider yourself. Have you ever been feeling down, had low self-esteem or lacked positivity? If the answer is yes, then I am sure you have then felt the power of a fresh change of clothes in lifting your mood and setting you back on the right track. The same applies for others who are suffering.

Therefore, the work that we do here at Thread Together is so important because it creates more and more opportunities for new beginnings.

Find your fit

Those who volunteer at Thread Together know the way a new outfit can change more than just external appearance. The clothes that we provide allow people in need to choose the way they are perceived. New, good quality clothing gives them the opportunity to express who they are on the inside. Marty, a volunteer at Thread Together explains, “being able to choose the clothes they need and partake in expressing their own identity. Power of choice, that’s what Thread Together provides as well as the practical help.”

So, next time you wake up in the morning and stand in front of your wardrobe wondering what to wear, think about who you are on the inside.

What do you want your clothes to say about you?
